죄로 인해 하나님과의 단절이라는 죽음 아래 살아가던 우리는 하나님의 주권적인 은혜와 예수 그리스도의 온전한 순종으로서의 죽으심을 통해 하나님께 나아갈 수 있는 자격을 얻었습니다. 그리고 우리의 약함을 도와주시는 성령님에 힘입어, 하나님의 영광에 이르는 소망을 얻게 되었습니다.

 

하지만 우리의 현실은 그러한 궁극적인 소망이 그리는 그림과는 거리가 멀어 보입니다. 우리는 여전히 우리 안의 죄와 힘겹게 싸우고 있고, 마주하는 환난 속에서 두려워합니다. 하나님께서 지으신 세상도 신음하며 해산의 고통을 겪고 있습니다. 

 

스가랴와 말라기 시대의 이스라엘 사람들과, 요한계시록 시대의 초대교회 성도들의 삶은 더욱 절망적이었습니다. 끝날 것 같아 보이지 않는 페르시아 제국 식민지에 사는 유대인들과, 다가오는 로마제국의 핍박 앞에 선 그리스도인들은, 그들의 삶의 현실과 궁극적 소망 사이에서 갈등과 혼란을 겪었을 것입니다. 이러한 하나님의 백성들에게 하나님께서는 온 세상의 왕으로서 반드시 돌아오시고, 이 세상을 심판하시며, 하나님의 나라를 회복시키실 것이라고 약속해 주십니다. 그러면서도 우리에게는 하나님께로 돌아서는 회개의 삶과 믿음을 지키며 인내하는 삶을 통해 왕 되신 하나님께서 이루실 심판과 회복을 준비하고 기다리라고 말씀하십니다. 

 

그리고 우리는 마땅히 이러한 하나님의 요청과 약속에 응답하면서, 우리의 이웃들도 하나님께 돌아오도록 초대해야겠습니다. 한 해 동안 스가랴와 말라기, 요한계시록을 함께 묵상하면서, 하나님께로 'return'함으로써 하나님의 'return'을 준비하는 은혜가 우리 안에 넘쳐나기를 바랍니다.

Theme description

We were living in death, separated from God because of our sin, but through God’s sovereign grace and Jesus Christ’s perfect obedience in his death, we have obtained the qualification to draw near to God. Now, empowered by the Holy Spirit who helps us in our weakness, we have received the hope of reaching the glory of God.

However, the reality of our lives seems very distant from the ultimate hope. We continue to struggle with our sin and to fear our everyday troubles while the world created by God groans and experiences the pain of childbirth. During the time of prophets Zechariah and Malachi, as well as when the Book of Revelation was written, the lives of the Israelites and early Christians appeared even more hopeless. The Jews, living under the Persian Empire that looked eternal, and the Christians, facing the persecution of the Roman Empire, would have been extremely confused due to the great chasm between the stark reality of their lives and their ultimate hope.

To these people of God, God promises that He will surely return as the King of the whole world to judge the world and to restore the Kingdom of God. In the meantime, God instructs us to lead lives of repentance and faith, persevering as we await the judgment and restoration that will be accomplished by God as the King. As we respond to God's request and promise, let us invite our neighbors to return to God. As we meditate on the books of Zechariah, Malachi, and Revelation together this year, may the grace that comes from preparing for God's "return" overflow within us as we "return" to God.
